I-10 White Oak Bayou Elevation project begins traffic switch in Houston

The Texas Construction News staff writer

HOUSTON — Motorists should anticipate delays in the Houston area as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has initiated a major traffic switch for the I-10 White Oak Bayou Elevation Project.

Beginning on Dec. 4, TxDOT crews began conducting multiple closures as part of advancing through phase one of the $400 million project. The project’s purpose is to raise the I-10 mainlanes between Heights Boulevard and I-45 above the White Oak Bayou floodplain, thereby reducing the risk of flooding and related road closures. The project will also include the reconstruction of the I-10 HOV lanes and the Houston Avenue Bridge.

The traffic switch reduced the I-10 westbound mainlanes between I-45 North Freeway and Houston Avenue from three to two lanes until mid-2026. Additionally, total closures were put in place for several connector ramps.
