SAN ANTONIO — Federal and military leaders gathered in late September to mark the start of construction on a critical family infrastructure project at Joint Base San Antonio. The groundbreaking marks a new Child Development Center at JBSA-Lackland, designed to provide modern and expanded childcare facilities for military families.
The ceremony on Sept. 29 included prominent officials from the 502nd Air Base Wing and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Col. Kenneth Rockwell, deputy commander for the USACE Southwestern Division, joined local military brass to commemorate the start of the project.
The new facility aims to address the growing demand for accessible, high-quality childcare on base, a priority that military leaders have increasingly linked to overall family readiness, well-being, and personnel retention. The construction is being actively managed by the USACE Fort Worth District.
The Fort Worth District has stated that the JBSA-Lackland project reflects its ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, technical infrastructure to military stakeholders across Texas. A completion date for the center has not yet been publicly announced.
