AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott announced on Aug. 6 that SpaceX will construct a vertically integrated semiconductor fabrication plant in Grimes County.
The first phase of the Terafab project represents a capital investment of more than $16.8 billion and is expected to create 3,000 new jobs. According to the governor’s office, the massive 100-million-sq. ft. facility will consolidate the chip production chain under a single roof. The plant aims to accelerate semiconductor manufacturing to supply the company’s future artificial intelligence and spatial computing needs.
“The first-of-its-kind Terafab facility will accelerate chip production in Texas at an unprecedented scale, create thousands of good-paying jobs in Grimes County, and expand economic opportunity for generations of Texans,” Abbott said in a statement.
SpaceX will receive a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) grant. The fabrication plant also qualifies for incentives under the state’s Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program, which was created to attract capital-intensive economic development projects to Texas.
