ALBANY – Preliminary site work has commenced on what is poised to become one of the largest data center campuses in the world—a $25-billion development in Shackelford County by Vantage Data Centers.

The Denver-based hyperscale data center provider announced the project, dubbed the “Frontier” campus, in August.  According to the Texas Construction Outlook 2026 report by TradeSTAR Inc., crews began initial site preparation late this year on the 1,200-acre property/

The sheer scale of the project marks a significant shift in the region’s construction landscape. Once complete, the campus is expected to support 1.4 gigawatts (GW) of IT capacity, designed largely to support the booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-density computing.

Project highlights:

  • Budget: Estimated at $25 billion upon full build-out.
  • Scale: 1,200 acres with 1.4 GW of power capacity.
  • Timeline: Site work is currently underway, with the first building expected to become operational in 2026.
  • Location: Shackelford County, utilizing the region’s renewable energy potential and available land.

The “Frontier” campus joins a growing list of mega-projects reshaping the Texas economy. It follows similar large-scale investments, such as the Samsung semiconductor fabrication plant in Taylor and the Texas Instruments complex in Sherman.

Construction activity on the site is expected to ramp up significantly in early 2026 as the project moves from grading and civil work to vertical construction of the initial data halls.
