New Braunfels Utilities launches $5.2 million infrastructure upgrade near downtown

NEW BRAUNFELS — New Braunfels Utilities (NBU) is set to break ground on a major neighborhood water and wastewater infrastructure improvement project near the city’s downtown core, addressing aging systems that no longer meet service requirements.

The $5.2 million project, slated to begin June 8, will systematically replace decaying utility lines to ensure long-term reliability and minimize future disruptions for local customers. Construction crews will install approximately 3,000 linear feet of new 4-inch to 8-inch water mains, along with about 3,800 linear feet of 8-inch wastewater mains.

The comprehensive upgrades will impact several residential corridors near the downtown area. Work is scheduled along East Coll Street, South Market Avenue, Grant Street, Katy Street, Jackson Street, Marigold Drive, and Mulberry Street.

Residents in the active work zones should anticipate temporary single-lane closures and restricted through-traffic, though NBU has assured the public that access to all homes will be maintained throughout the construction process. Minor water service interruptions are expected toward the end of the project during final waterline tie-ins and service switchovers; however, residents will be notified prior to any planned shutoffs.

The infrastructure overhaul represents a critical investment by the not-for-profit, community-owned utility to modernize systems in the historic and rapidly growing city. Construction is anticipated to continue through November 2026, depending on weather conditions.
