AMARILLO – Fermi America has deepened its strategic partnership with Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) to spearhead Project Matador, a massive $90 billion nuclear and clean energy campus in Carson County.
The project, located on 5,855 acres leased from Texas Tech University, aims to address the soaring power demands of the AI and semiconductor industries. At its core, the development will feature four Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear reactors, providing 4.4 GW of steady baseload power. When combined with planned solar, natural gas, and battery storage, the campus is expected to generate a total of 11 GW of power.
Hyundai E&C brings a track record of completing 24 nuclear reactors to the venture. Current front-end engineering design (FEED) work is underway, focusing on site planning and cooling systems. Groundbreaking is slated for 2026, with the first reactor expected to be operational by 2031.
