AUSTIN — Construction has officially begun on the $1.6 billion redevelopment and expansion of the Austin Convention Center, officials announced Sept. 3.
The project, known as “UnconventionalATX,” has entered its first structural phase with the start of diaphragm wall (D-wall) activities. These deep underground concrete walls will form the perimeter foundation for the new, larger facility.
The project is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. Officials emphasized that the $1.6 billion investment is fully funded by Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) revenues, Convention Center revenues, and the state’s Project Financing Zone, with no funding from property taxes.
The redevelopment is projected to boost the Convention Center’s annual economic impact by $285 million, bringing its total yearly contribution to nearly $750 million.
“This milestone signifies more than construction—it represents years of community collaboration, thoughtful analysis, and broad public engagement,” said Austin Convention Center Department Director Trisha Tatro. “We are building more than just a venue—we’re building Austin’s future.”
