LUBBOCK – The Texas Tech University Department of Civil, Environmental & Construction Engineering has been awarded a $1.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to lead a pilot project targeting rural traffic fatalities.
Managed by the Center for Multidisciplinary Research in Transportation (TechMRT), the initiative focuses on “Failure to Yield” and pedestrian safety at rural intersections—areas that statistically suffer from higher fatality rates than urban centers. The project will leverage advanced sensor technology and predictive modeling to develop low-cost, high-impact engineering interventions that can be scaled across the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) rural network.
