WASHINGTON, D.C. — The final design for the Texas Legation Memorial has received official approval from the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), clearing the way for a permanent Texas footprint in the heart of the nation’s capital. The memorial, commissioned by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, honors the diplomats who represented the Republic of Texas between 1836 and 1845.
Construction and materials:
- Stone work: The memorial features a prominent five-sided plinth resting on a star-shaped base made of white Mt. Airy granite.
- Landscape architecture: The design incorporates a “Brazos River Basin” theme, using native Texas flora including Blue Grama grass and a Sweetbay Magnolia tree.
- Location: The site is situated on Indiana Avenue, strategically positioned to offer a contemplative space within the busy D.C. corridor.
